Most of the
wealthiest (最富的) people in the world come from
the computer business. Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft, is one of the most
successful (成功的).
He first met
with a computer at Lake School in Seattle. At the age of fifteen, he programmed
(设计程序) computers while his high school
classmates were playing basketball. In 1973, Gates went to Harvard University
where he stayed for two years. He left to go into business with his friend Paul
Allen. By 1976, the Gates Allen team was already famous in computer circles (领域). Their operating system (操作系统), MS-DOS, became the operating system for
personal computers all over the world.
Gates started
his own company. At the Microsoft company headquarters (总部) near the city of Seattle, workers can wear
shorts, have long hair, drink cans of coca-cola, and roller blade (穿着旱冰鞋) from one office to the other. Microsoft
becomes one of the biggest companies in the world.
In Japan there are many holidays
and other great days. We can tell a few here.
The
fifth birthday of a boy is a great day in the family. The boy puts on a shirt
like the one his father wears. It is an important moment in his life and means
that he must now be a manly little boy like his father. He must smile when he
has pain (疼痛) or trouble. He must carry on.
The day a girl becomes seven years
old is a big day in the family. She may now wear a sash (腰带) like the one her mother wears. Her friends
and her mother's friends come and drink tea and eat cakes. It means that the
girl must now be a womanly little girl and help in the home.
One of the great holidays in Japan
is the Emperor's (天皇) birthday. Instead of school
there are picnics, games, sports and speeches (演讲),
as we have on our fourth of July in America.

In the United
Stated, many young people who are still at school try to earn money in their
free time. Andthere are lots of
jobs for them, too. Terry,
one of Jolene’s friends, works in a supermarket. If he works a lot of hours, he
can earn $100 a week. He has already saved a thousand dollars. When he is at school, he dreams about what he is going to buy with the
money that he has saved. Marc sometimes sells ice cream on the beach if they
have really good weather. Pam’s father is a doctor at a local
hospital. Pam works in the kitchens there for about ten hours a week, for $7 an
hour. Bryan has a great job. He works in the tourist center. If tourists need
information, they come in; and Bryan answers their questions, for example,
where they can buy Mexican food, how they can get to the Golden Gate Bridge, or
when the bus leaves for the tour to the Death Valley. Some of Jolene’s friends
do babysitting. They don’t get much money an hour, but it isn’t hard work, and
if they’re lucky, they can watch TV all the time.

Home Schooling
All children in the United States
have to receive an education, but the law does not say they have to be educated
at school. A number of parents prefer (宁可)
not to send their children to school. Children who are educated at home are
known as “home-schoolers.” There are about 300,000
home-schoolers in the United States today. Some
parents prefer teaching their children at home because they do not believe that
public schools teach the correct religious values; others believe they can
provide a better educational experience for their children by teaching them at
home. Interestingly, results show that home-schooled children quite often do
better than average on national tests in reading and math.
Home schooling is often more
interesting than regular schools, but critics say that home schoolers are
outsiders who might be uncomfortable mixing with other people in adult life.
Critics also say that most parents are not well qualified to teach their
children. However, most parents don’t have the time or the desire to teach
their children at home, so schools will continue to be where most children get
their formal education.
